What Is BAH and How Does It Work?

BAH stands for Basic Allowance for Housing. It's a monthly, tax-free payment the military gives you to cover off-post housing when government quarters aren't provided. 

 

Here's what most service members don't realize:

- BAH is based on the median rental cost in your duty station's local market, not your actual rent or mortgage payment.

- It varies by your pay grade (rank) and whether you have dependents.


- If BAH rates go down next year, your rate stays the same as long as your rank, duty station, and dependency status don't change. This is called rate protection.


- BAH is not designed to cover 100% of housing costs for everyone. Depending on where you live and what you choose, you may have some out-of-pocket expenses — or you may come in under budget.


The bottom line: BAH is yours to use however it makes the most sense for your family. Live close to the post, live in the suburbs, rent, or buy — the choice is yours.
